Description

A Short Study of the Sabbath from Creation to Consummation

When it comes to the Sabbath, Christians have different ideas on what it means and how to observe it. For many people, it is a day to go to church and have fellowship with other believers. What they often miss, though, is that the Sabbath is intricately tied to rest and worship―both of which ultimately point to the Lord as our creator and redeemer.

In this addition to the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series, Guy Prentiss Waters offers an introductory study of the Sabbath from the creation of the world to the consummation of all things when Jesus returns. He shows how the Sabbath is observed through the major themes and genres of the Bible―creation, law, prophets, Jesus, and the apostles―and how that applies to our lives today. Waters teaches us about the Sabbath’s full restoration in the new heavens and the new earth and its continual reminder of the covenant that God has made with his people.

Written for New Believers and Seasoned Saints Alike: Perfect for laypersons, pastors, college and seminary students, and academics Practical: Examines how the Sabbath is relevant to the church now as well as how it will be restored in the new heavens and the new earth Short Studies in Biblical Theology: Part of a series designed to give readers accessible volumes on God’s word

About the Author

Dane Ortlund

After obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible/Theology at Wheaton College, Dane married his beloved, Stacey. Together, they relocated to Connecticut where they embarked on a teaching journey at a Christian high school.

Fueled by a strong sense of calling to ministry and a passion for biblical truth, Dane enrolled at Covenant Theological Seminary which left an indelible mark of grace on his life.

Fresh from basking in the doctrines of life-giving grace, Dane returned to Wheaton to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy degree in New Testament. This academic pursuit paved the way for a fruitful decade in the publishing industry where he dedicated his time and expertise at Crossway in Wheaton, primarily working on the ESV Bible and its associated resources. Gradually, he ascended to the role of Chief Publishing Officer, overseeing the production of books and other materials. Serving such a significant ministry was an immense privilege, and in addition to his publishing duties, he had the delightful adventure of teaching, preaching, and guiding Wheaton students, as well as exploring the world through travel!

However, the divine hand of the Lord steered him towards a new chapter in his life — full-time ministry in the local church. Through a series of unexpected events orchestrated by divine providence, he found himself being called to the pastorate by none other than Naperville Presbyterian Church, the very church that had been his family's spiritual home for the past 13 years.

Dane says that his “life calling is to dive deep into the unspeakable heart of Jesus for sinners and sufferers, and to invite others to enjoy that boundless ocean with him.”

There are books for me, and books for my daughter. I've been challenged, inspired, encouraged and I feel like it's really strengthening my walk with the Lord!
I love the REF-UL app. I am always on the go and I need something inspiring to listen to, but that can get eeeexpensive. Not with REF-UL. This app HAS EVERYTHING I NEED: I play it, I like it, I go on listening. Or I play it, it doesn’t resonate, and I go to the next title. I DON’T HAVE TO PAY MORE! And what is best is it has not only my favorite authors, but also the ones I have never listened to but are on my bucket list.
